The Problem

Campus safety concerns don’t always happen in calm or predictable moments. They often arise when someone is already feeling anxious, unsure, or under pressure to act quickly. In these situations, reporting an incident can feel intimidating—especially on mobile.

Existing reporting processes can be unclear or slow, creating hesitation at the very moment when timely action matters most.

Design Goal

The goal of this project was to design a calm, mobile-first reporting experience that helps students take action with confidence. The focus was on reducing friction, guiding users through clear steps, and creating a sense of reassurance throughout the reporting process.

Rather than adding features, the emphasis was on clarity, speed, and trust.

Design Principles

These principles guided every design decision throughout the experience, especially during moments where users may feel stressed or unsure.

Speed under stress

When users feel unsafe, hesitation increases. The experience prioritizes fast access to key actions and minimizes unnecessary steps so students can report an incident without slowing down to think.

Minimal cognitive load

Stress makes complex interfaces harder to process. Each screen focuses on a single task, reducing visual noise and limiting choices so users can stay focused on taking action.

Trust through transparency

In sensitive situations, users need to feel that their actions matter. Clear confirmations, status indicators, and straightforward messaging help build trust in the reporting process.

Reassurance through clarity

Uncertainty can heighten anxiety in high-pressure situations. Clear language, predictable flows, and visible feedback help users feel supported and confident at every step.
